Habitat for Humanity Dedicates Northfield Home

Rice County Habitat for Humanity dedicated the first of its two 2007 homes on Saturday, September 15th. The home at 900 2nd Street West was built in partnership with the Troy and Laura Simonson family on land donated by the Northfield Hospital and Northfield Housing and Redevelopment Authority, and was opened to the public at the celebration. I’m the newly-elected vice-president of the board of the Rice County chapter, and am highly impressed by what I’ve seen the organization do in my first year on the board.

The home was built with major sponsorship by Wells Fargo and Edina Realty of Northfield and Faribault under the volunteer construction management of Don Pavek of College City Homes. The home features an energy-efficient shell of insulated concrete form construction thanks to the generosity of VanHaren Construction of Faribault. Numerous other local businesses provided labor and materials for the project. “Super-volunteers” Wayne Kivell, Bill Lindstrom and Larry Walsh were singled out for their extraordinary contributions to the project, each having put in many long days of volunteer work on the project.

Rice County Habitat for Humanity is currently looking for partner families for 2008 and 2009. Partner families put sweat equity into their and other Habitat homes, and are able to move into the affordably-priced homes upon their completion.

Habitat’s mission is to build decent, affordable housing in partnership with qualified homebuyers. Rice County Habitat for Humanity will soon finish its 14th house (this one in Nerstrand) since its inception in 1991.
